Lighting is the single most powerful tool for transforming the mood and atmosphere of any room in the home. A strategically placed floor lamp can illuminate a living room so you can read at any time of the day, while a tri-light table lamp, softly lit in the bedroom, creates an intimate ambience. Lighting camouflages flaws and accentuates beauty, and Toronto’s Dean Lee knows this better than anyone.
As owner of Studio Lampcage, a cozy lighting shop in Cabbagetown, Dean is constantly reinventing how lighting can be manipulated. “I’ve always been drawn to lighting…beautiful lights,” he explains. “I always liked the simplicity; simple and clean lines. That’s the model that I’m working on always, trying to create simple but beautiful light.” For Dean, if there are several different ways of using lighting to create a particular atmosphere, he finds it’s usually the most straightforward one that’s most effective.
