As the days get longer and brighter, it’s getting harder and harder to spend all day cooped up inside. Bring your sun salutations and downward facing dogs out into the fresh air to the following places offering outdoor yoga classes this summer. [Photo credit: iStock/SilviaJansen]
Mat Collective – an initiative that started as a yoga mat recycling program and grew into a yoga community – is serving up an amazing opportunity for alfresco yoga this summer with free outdoor yoga classes. Mat Collective’s outdoor classes take place every day of the week at two locations: Kits Beach Park and the north side of Riley Park by Merakos Fieldhouse (which is also where you’ll find Mat Collective’s indoor shared studio space). Not sure you’ll fit in? Classes are available for all ages and ability levels and class styles include Hatha, Flow, Power, Kundalini and Yin. Just bring your own mat, if you have one (there are free mats available to borrow) or beach towel.
Since 2007, YYoga has been a favourite for providing yoga, fitness and wellness to the Lower Mainland. This year, YYoga and the City of Richmond have come together to provide a variety of free Flow yoga classes throughout the summer with their Sunset Yoga Series. Running on most Sunday evenings from 5 to 6 pm, these free outdoor classes are a great way to end your weekend in the sunshine. YYoga’s Sunset Yoga Series takes place at the Olympic Riverside Plaza throughout July and August.
Grouse Mountain’s Peak of Vancouver and YYoga have teamed up to give super-active yogis a view to remember with summer outdoor yoga classes on the top of Grouse Mountain. Led by YYoga instructors, the 60-minute, weather-permitting outdoor yoga classes run on weekend mornings throughout July and August and are held in the plaza, just outside the chalet. The best part? Getting to class is as fun as the class itself: enjoy spectacular views as you take the Skyride up the mountain, or hike the Grouse Grind for an amazing pre-class sweat sesh.

Nikki Johnston Beaudoin of Sea to Sky Fitness has teamed up with Takaya Tours to offer a whole new way to enjoy outdoor yoga – finding your zen while balancing on water – with summer stand-up paddleboard yoga. Classes for all levels run on Friday evenings from June to September at Port Moody’s Belcarra Park and North Vancouver’s Strathcona Park.
