This is a very clear and simple explanation of inflation. During my The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) public policy analysis course, I learned about Representatives accountability and how policymakers could be punish for the market failures. For example, in a democratic system, citizens vote for the political leaders is a way to held policymakers accountable for their actions. This is known as a vertical accountability. In other hand, in a well established democracy, horizontal accountability, when institutions are independent and can checks and balance the behavior of elected officials could be a way of control. The fact is that in some countries, particularly a developing one, it could be very difficult due to the social polarisation to have vertical or horizontal accountability. That’s means, even when they have the perfect information about the behavior of a leaders, voters prefer to elect representatives who they identity with such as the same ethnic group, religion, language, gender, etc. It results in a populism politician. In this case, I think social accountability should be a good alternative. Civic engagement could be a way to control policymakers and theirs decisions. Civil society or groups of interests may play a role in monitoring public policy process, corrupt politicians and bring societal changes. What do you think about it? How it works in your country ?

In response, the company intends to launch a series of campaigns with Commission de la construction du Québec and boost charitable donations/sponsorships that help underrepresented groups access trades careers. 📡 What happens when diverse expertise comes together to solve complex infrastructure monitoring challenges? Working alongside our collaborative partners from the National Research Council Canada and MDA Space, this unique multidisciplinary team combined our different subject matter expertise - from satellite remote sensing to structural engineering – to develop an innovative method of monitoring critical infrastructure, using the iconic Samuel de Champlain Bridge in Montreal, Canada as our test case. 🤝 Key achievements through collaboration: • Creative, scientifically sound solutions using Geo-data expertise • Cost-effective monitoring for remote and difficult-to-access structures • Reliable assessment between traditional inspections without "boots on the ground" This partnership demonstrates how bringing together specialized knowledge can solve complex infrastructure challenges. A recent report by Desjardins underscores a pressing challenge: Canada’s student housing crisis. With only one in ten students having access to on-campus residence beds, many are forced into unaffordable off-campus housing, intensifying pressures on the general housing market. In Oshawa, Atria Developments has proposed a 25-storey, purpose-built student housing project at 13, 15, and 29 Charles Street. This building will offer 408 rental units designed for students from Ontario Tech University, addressing a significant market demand in the area. Unlike some municipalities, Oshawa’s planning framework does not restrict private student housing developments, enabling initiatives like this to move forward. Beyond providing much-needed housing, this project will contribute to the vibrancy and growth of Downtown Oshawa, supporting local amenities and infrastructure. Experts like Luisa Sotomayor from York University’s CITY Institute highlight the broader challenge: the shift away from post-secondary institutions investing in residences and reliance on the private sector. While private-public partnerships like York University’s recent 812-bed residence show promise, zoning by-laws and financial hurdles often slow progress in many Canadian cities. Oshawa’s proactive approach demonstrates how thoughtful urban planning can ease the student housing crunch while stimulating local economic growth. This is a promising step forward, but addressing Canada’s student housing crisis will require collaboration across sectors and cities. I’m delighted to share that our paper, "Optimization for Construction Site Layout Planning with Multiple Constraints Using an Evolutionary Algorithm", has been published in the Proceedings of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering / La Société canadienne de génie civil Annual Conference 2023. This paper introduces a genetic algorithm-based optimization model to tackle the complexities of site layouts, while considering irregular facility arrangements and diverse real-world constraints. By optimizing the placement of temporary facilities, the study highlights how improved layouts can enhance workflow efficiency, minimize travel distances, and contribute to cost savings and safety. 🌿 Exciting Partnership Announcement: SIGLab and WSP Canada 🚀 We are thrilled to announce a new partnership between the Sustainable Infrastructure and Geoengineering Lab (SIGLab) and WSP in Canada to address the challenges posed by climate change on #mine tailings storage facilities. This innovative project, titled "Effect of Climate Change on Geomechanical Behavior and Flow Liquefaction of Tailings", aims to enhance the #safety and #sustainability of Canada's #mining sector by developing a performance-based evaluation framework for #tailings in cold and #permafrost regions. In response to recent tailings storage facility failures, we will develop an advanced #geomechanical model for tailings by considering factors such as freeze-thaw cycles, chemical properties, salinity, and environmental/climatic loads. By combining laboratory testing and numerical simulations, our collaboration will deliver practical #recommendations for tailings dam management under #climatechange impacts. This partnership leverages WSP's expertise in tailings dam design and management and SIGLab's advanced research capabilities to create innovative solutions for tailings stability. WSP, a leading engineering firm with extensive experience in sustainable mining practices, will work closely with the academic team at Polytechnique Montréal. Together, we will supervise trainees and ensure the research findings are translated into practical solutions for managing tailings dams. This collaboration is set to address the critical needs of the mining industry, especially in #northern regions, and advance industry standards to promote safer, more sustainable tailings facilities. Soil reinforcement using honeycomb geometry of cellular-confinement-system (CCS) has gained importance in improving the modulus of soil-geocell composite structural layers in recent years. Some recent applications have shown advantages in terms of damping and elastic performance under dynamic loads, particularly with high-tensile strength and high-modulus CCS. For numerical modelling and dynamic assessment, Poisson’s ratio plays a critical role. While the Poisson’s ratio of CCS material and the granular material can be derived separately, understanding the composite Poisson’s ratio is complex. The paper highlights a methodology for calculating the composite Poisson’s ratio within the reinforced composite layer.

As an artificial intelligence specialist for Pomerleau, one of Canada's premier construction companies, Majid Seydgar is tasked with more than simply envisioning the potential applications of the technology in construction. Rather, he's tasked with enacting them. "In my role at Pomerleau, I focus on generative AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs) and large foundational models (LFMs), to revolutionize everyday tasks in the construction industry," said Seydgar in an interview with BuiltWorlds Research Analyst Sofie Richardson. He talks about using AI for retrieval-augmented generation patters, fine-tuning models, and integrating LLMs into existing AI applications. "One of the projects I worked on involved utilizing LLMs to allow users to interact with cloud databases effortlessly by asking questions in plain language," Seydgar said. "This project leveraged generative AI in combination with computing agents to analyze both input queries (in plain language) as well as database content to locate and retrieve the target information, perform computation and return the output to the users."
