the steak was good but the bill was to high for me for those that are meat lovers ist the place for the decor is nice and the wine is expensive
We spend for 3 people $89.00. I don't mind paying money for Good Food, but these steaks you could have find them at a Regular Restaurant, and a lot cheaper, not only that but when they try to get your for every single thing that other restaurants give for free, it unreasonable. A simple example, Drink, I ordered a diet coke, and they ordered 4 more, but not think that they were charging me for each drink. Come on, we are paying good money for the food, why charge for drinks, if it is the cheapest in the menu, well for 4 drinks for me, 3 drinks for my brother, come up to be like $15.00 for the drinks.
was recommended to eat at als from the concierge at the lord elgin hotel...great choice! my family fell in love with the house garlic salad dressing which we asked to have with our apps as well (zucchini and calamari). I had the rib steak which the waitress recommended cooked medium rare and i was not disappointed, my steak was so tender and perfectly cooked, same with my wife's. My daughter had the pepper steak which she loved and my son ordered a small steak off the childrens menu and enjoyed it as well. We shared the coconut cream pie for dessert...unreal!!!! Great restaurant, we'll be back.
We came down from Montreal for the weekend and had heard that Als was the place in town for a great steak and we heard right. We all started with a house salad with Als famous creamy garlic sauce which was without a doubt the best dressing I've ever had. In fact I actually bought a bottle of it after the meal. My wife who's not big on steak had the stuffed chicken which she loved and i had a 12oz New York cut which was cooked to perfection! We sat in the front along the street which was like being outside since they had the windows open...excellent! cant say enough good things about this place...service, atmosphere and especially FOOD!!! i highly recommend it
To give this restaurant an adequate rating is being generous. A sharing plate of hors d'oeuvres that wasn't fit for pub fare. Ribs hidden under sauce. Underdone fatty grisly steak (asked for med-rare got rare) terrible vegetables and a beer with a date code on the bottle that showed it was 7 months old (wine improves with age - not beer. Where were they hiding that one?). Dill pickles are a nice garnish for a smoked meat sandwich - not a $27.00 steak (although it was probably the best tasting thing on the plate). Either something drastically changed since the previous reviews or this place merely rides on an outdated reputation. Did I complain? No because it was a special occasion and I wasn't up to the fight and spoil a previously good day. Would I go back? Not on your life. Very pedestrian setting with gourmet pricing. Highly over-rated.
The steak was tastey and juicey, and cooked like i asked. The salad was fantastic and well served, the wine was a very good price. Desert was delicious. Most people i know love this resturant, i find it hard to beleive some people dont. It's expensive, but no other resturant serves the same delicious steak.
I had the best New York Sirloin steak imagineable. It was juicy and cooked to my liking (medium-rare). The service was fantastic, we had a very dynamic server who catered to us with the utmost attention. I had a fantastic appetizer beforehand ... succulent escargot with cheese ... delicious. If there were more restaurants like this in Ottawa, than I would venture out more often, so far this is the best yet!
This place takes you back to a time when vegetables were a garnish. What they do, they do very well, but the definitely cater to an older, beef-eating crowd. Great food for a change of pace.
Food was good, but the pricing...ouch. VERY expensive. Steak was wonderful, but you pay for it.
Great steak. Side dishes could use some work. Great desserts.
We had a nice time in the lounge and the cocktails were well prepared and presented, but when we moved to the diningroom the experienced changed. The service was dramatically different although the food was very good. The portions were perfect, but the price was a bit disproportional.
The meal was excellent. Our server kept forgetting to bring water ... all night ... but otherwise, an enjoyable experience.
My experience was very average at best. The meat was uninspiring, the garlic bread consisted of two generous pieces however it wasn't good bread and I'm not sure what kind of commercial garlic spread (sprinkles?) were used. I liked the salad and the blue cheese house dressing. I tried a taste of the dessert and I'm glad I didn't order any - it had a very processed taste. We had two bottles of wine - which were reasonably prices as far as restaurants go ($38 each or so). The service was there but it didn't sparkle. The decor is clean and bright but pretty pass?. The restaurant was quite full so this isn't to say Al doesn't have a following - but I would expect better for the $460 I spent.
About the only good thing I can say is that the steak was cooked as desired. The side dishes tasted horrible. Dessert looked good but tasted bad. Cake was still frozen inside when served. The meal was overpriced for what was served.
