The staff that work at captain jacks are lovely! They make you feel welcomed and it feels like home! The food is amazing! I personally love the breaded sole or halibut and the gravy is always delicious some times a bit runny but it happens! The comments about the oil years ago are a bit silly cause I've been in and my friends have and see them every night cleaning it! I love the post cards on the wall from costumers that send them to them! I've seen big groups in and families it's a place 4 evr1
What a great fish n' chip place! I was coming home late from work one night when I decided to stop in (as I had been in the plaza dropping off a rental truck).
The waitress/hostess was exceptionally friendly - I was ordering to take home but when my order was ready I didn't really want to leave. She really made you feel like you were welcome and appreciated your business.
The fish and chips were great. My wife was upset that I only bought her a 1 piece fish dinner instead of 2!!!!!
The fries were still crispy when I got home!!!!

Service was fast and friendly at suppertime on a Friday in November.
The only downside is that the halibut and fries tasted much the same due to over-used frying oil. Good quality halibut is flaky and does not taste fishy but every order I had at Cap jacks tasted fishy. This was my last time. Halibut always sells for a premium price so provide the best fish.
Recommendations: change the fying oil more often; do not fry halibut in the same oil used for other seafood.
A true mom and pop fish and chips shop that is catering to the gluten-free crowd (and all you other gluten loving traditionalist fish and chips fans)! The husband does all the cooking - and follows a gluten-free diet for himself, so knows the in and outs of true gluten-free cuisine. He's even making his own GF batter for battered shrimp! (Which, sampled by non-GF family members, were commended for being better than the traditional!) The wife takes care of the front of the house, and bakes the deserts. She had a GF banana loaf to offer up tonight, and it was fantastic! Although the GF options were a pleasant surprise, it didn't overshadow the wonderful fish that they serve; my English grandmother had the lightly battered halibut and was "really pleased" with her dish. After our meal, it was easy to see why the restaurant was filled with regulars - great food and great service. And well, finding out they cater to the GF crowd was just a bonus!
Went with my boyfriend's mother to Captain Jack's for the first time this evening. I had the Cajun grilled catfish. DELICIOUS. It was very good. I also really liked the fries, gravy and even the coleslaw. I devoured everything on my plate.
The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the tartar sauce. It was a bit runny.
The waitress was very friendly, ( I apologize about my boyfriends mom's dollar something tip. She doesn't really get the tipping thing)
Overall, I was impressed and will be back. LOVED that catfish.
got delivery tonight, halibut (regular batter) and chips and a ceaser salad. Fish and chips, and ceaser salad are both one of my regular favorites at restuarants, i know them well. Order taker was very friendly, total'ed the order for me and asked about condiments. delivery was about 45min, a good average time for delivery speed. fish and chips were hot and salad was cold. chips were a little greasy but good, looked home made, and a good sized portion. The fish was good tasteing, i ate every last peice, tho there was way more batter then fish. i will try the light batter next time but i would order regular again. the fish came with lemons, vinegar, and tartar sauce. The ceaser salad was very good, bacon, parmason cheese on top and lemons on the side. Good tasteing dressing and lettuse was chrisp not saugy.
Overall very good and I would order again.
We have ordered fish & chips from this place a few times, the fish has always been over battered and greasy. However guelph doesn't have many fish & chip places that offer delivery so we tried again but this time we asked for a light batter; instead we got heavy batter with literally no halibut inside. We got four pieces of Hollow battered halibut and old/stale french fries after spending $60.00!
After taking notice of this we called them, the lady who took our order which I'm assuming is the owner said we made it how we always do, and we told her that we asked for light batter, not light fish. Again she said the fish is the same as always, we told her that we haven't eaten any of it and are not happy with our order, She replied by saying - well my husband cooked it and that she is not replacing the food, or sending the driver back to give us a refund! We then told her we will bring the food back and would like something to be done about it. She said even if you come here with the food, we are not going to do anything about it. When we asked why she wouldn't replace our food, or give us a refund/credit she hung up the phone.
Just letting it be known that this place only care's about making a quick buck and could careless about customer satisfaction!!! (p.s. their tartar sauce is similar to watered down mayonnaise-- awful)
I haven't been here for a few years and really disappointed in the food. My husband found the fish greasy and very "bready". Mine was better as it had light batter but the biggest disappointment was the french fries. Fish and Chip shops should have the best chips and these were pale, undercooked and "blah". I think they are frozen fries and that should never be a a F & C store and if they are fresh, I think a new potato supplier is in order. Their coleslaw was very good and the service very friendly.

Excellent portions - and a choice of regular or thin batter! No place does that. Service is wonderful, food is tasty, portions are a good size and the atmosphere is fun and friendly. This is our location of choice. Nothing can surprass it.

Good portions for the price of the food! The fish was delicious, and when I requested an extra slice of lemon I was given it with a smile! The waitress is an absolute doll. The cheeseburger is homemade, with great effort, however it missed the ball on most of our palates. It looked a little dry, and was spiced oddly. Absolutley huge and a great deal for the price, if the spices in the hamburger suit your tastes. The fries were a little soggy, and I had hoped that maybe they were going to do home made fries. There was a plate that had gone into the kitchen, and the fries on that plate looked different then the ones we recieved, so maybe as the restaurant filled up they switched to frozen fries. I don't know. It was good, the service was very attentive for how busy the restaurant is, .. I hope to go back soon! I have a craving!

The food and service was absolutely the best.Our waitress was very friendly and easy to talk to,made us feel right at home.the decor is very nautical,made us feel like there should be a pier right outside the door..best fish we have ever tasted.And when you visit Captain Jack's you just have to read the "letter from mother" posted on the wall at the front.Overall,we recommend this restaurant to anyone and everyone.......first class sevice and food ! ! ! ! !
