When Dr. Dirk Dekens arrived in Canada on January 1st, 1989, there was a foot of snow and an unknown future waiting for him in Edmonton. “It was late at night and it was cold. It was a bit of a shock to the system,” says the veterinarian and owner of Dekens Housecall Veterinary Services. Dr. Dekens had just emigrated from Belgium where he ran a small animal vet clinic. He was looking to make a change and Canada accepted his application.

Without any job prospects, he met the provincial veterinary registrar in Edmonton and asked what was available. “He gave us a list of 30 clinics in Alberta that were looking for vets. I got in a car and started driving around in this snowstorm. I met with various clinics and ultimately a few weeks later ended up in Calgary,” explains Dr. Dekens. His first job was with the Calgary Animal Emergency Veterinary Clinic and he later became the first full-time vet hired by the Calgary Humane Society.

When Dr. Dekens was growing up, his doctor would make house calls so when he decided to open up his own vet clinic he wanted to continue that tradition. “The idea of having someone come to the house and take care of your medical needs was not foreign to me,” says Dr. Dekens. “It was a natural fit.”

    Dr. Dekens is a v...

    Dr. Dekens is a very compassionate understanding "End Of Life" Practicing Dr. He came to our house on more than one occasion (Unfortunatly), but took great care with the passing of our loved ones. Extream Care was used both while alive and juring after life care. The remains were returned prompltly and at a fair price. All this, and your loved one gets to remain in their most comfortable place for passing. Thank you Dr Dekens.
