There is something unique going on at the Tamarind East Indian Restaurant. Th menu features beef rendang, a Sumatran dish infused with coconut and lime, which is something truly special. Ditto, the curiously named Chicken 65. Its unique flavours combine a southern Indian mustard sauce with the kitchen’s anchovy-based rendition of Chinese XO sauce.
“It’s Indian fusion cuisine,” beams Johnny Walia who, along with his mother Bubly and brother Jay owns and operates the Tamarind East Indian Restaurant. He exudes enthusiasm when describing its food. “I want to call it Pan-Asian, but people might not know what to think of that. We are trying different things with Indian food,” he says.
Walia says the inspiration for the spectacular beef rendang came from a visit to a Malaysian restaurant in London, England. Taken aback by its superb version of the dish, and he wanted to bring this added zing to his family’s traditional dishes. The chicken tikka, for example, is served on rectangular china plates and garnished with pickled ginger. Even the decor has a hip, cosmopolitan feel one might find in the trendy districts of London. Limestone walls and reflective wallpaper further set the mood.
