You won’t miss Junction 9 Yoga & Pilates as you walk down Ninth Avenue Southeast in Inglewood. The Junction 9 building, sandwiched between The Apothecary of Inglewood and an office building, has been re-designed to feature an impressive wooden façade built of reclaimed wooden planks. Within, owner-instructors Kailey Beddoe and Jilaine Beddoe have created a warm and welcoming exercise space. Bright and white, its attractive complexion embraces the creative spirit of its historic, boutique-filled neighbourhood.
The studio's name is derived from its street number as well as the fact that it's located just across the street from the watery junction of the Bow and Elbow rivers and backs onto the rail line that runs through Inglewood. “We started talking about how yoga and Pilates were coming together under one roof and how it is a junction when people come together,” says Jilaine. “It just worked perfectly.”
The two, who happen to be cousin-in-laws, both came to the yoga and Pilates world separately. They now celebrate their friendship and shared spirituality in this unique studio and community space. A Calgary yoga instructor with eight years' experience, Jilaine was keen to act on her own vision.
“I lived in Australia for awhile and found that the yoga and Pilates studios were very affordable and accessible,” says Kailey, a trained pilates instructor. “When I returned to Calgary, the classes I found were very expensive and hard to get in to. It just didn't work for my lifestyle." Influenced by studios Kailey had visited in Melbourne, the two decided to open their own yoga and Pilates studio.
